Razer Megalodon
The megalodon (“big tooth” in Greek) was the apex predator of the prehistoric times – a giant shark that could grow larger than 18 meters (59 ft) long. It’s no wonder why Razer has named this headset accordingly. The Razer Megalodon is a 7.1 virtual surround sound headset with a built in noise filtering microphone. The main attraction of the Megalodon is the USB sound card that comes with it. For gaming systems without a sound card it is a cost effective sound card + headphones + microphone solution, while maintaining relatively high quality sound. One of the best things about this headset is no drivers are necessary, simply plug it in and Windows will recognize the headset shortly after.
The Razer Megalodon is completely black, with a cool blue Razer logo on each ear cup. The headband features a thick comfortable material, and keeps the headset in place without adding too much pressure or ‘clamping’ as you find with some headsets. The ear cups themselves are large and enclose the ear nicely. Another great feature that’s widely ignored is the 3.3m (10.8 ft) cable – there’s nothing worse than a small cable, particularly on a headset and Razer have always been generous in this department.
The USB sound card is approximately the size of a fist and sits snuggly on your desktop and thanks to a rubber matting on the bottom it won’t slide all over the place. On the USB sound card is a variety of controls which allow you to control volume (including that of individual ‘speakers’), bass, microphone volume & sensitivity and to switch between stereo and 7.1 mode – great if you’re in the middle of a game.
Performance wise the Razer Megalodon is best if the sound source supports 7.1 output. Otherwise you’ll find that either the 7.1 or 2.1 setting will work best depending on the particular game you’re playing. Music and Videos are much the same, quality DVD and Blu-Ray movies will usually sound best on 7.1, but other forms of media seem to sound best as 2.1.
Overall the Razer Megalodon is perfect for gamers who need a cheap sound card and headset solution. If you’ve got a larger budget at your disposal you’ll probably be better off buying a sound card and headset separately though.
